In 1976, two young women were initiated as associate members of Gamma Iota Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated . in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Their names were Soror Connie Russell-Starks and Soror Wilma Wiley. They then set out to create a new chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority on the campus of Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) where they were attending school. After receiving approval from the campus, the charter chapter on the campus, a membership intake process began, and the Pledge line was formed in November 1976 composed of ten (10) young women then called the Archonian Club “AC” . This Pledge line was named “Sweet Inspiration”.
Only four (4) of those young ladies would go on to become members, Sorors Dr. Gwendolyn Christine Taylor, Dr. Barbara Akins-Hodges, Gail M. Clemons, and Cheryl D. Giles. Their final initiation ceremony, conducted in Chattanooga, Tennessee was on February 26, 1977. During the summer of 1977, confirmation of our new chapter name, Mu Theta chartering ceremony was held on September 17, 1977. Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated brought new life to the campus of MTSU with our ideals of Finer Womanhood, Scholarship, Service and Sisterhood (Sisterly Love). With the addition of the Alpha line in November 1977, Soror Karen Stewart-Gill, Soror Janice Weathers, Soror Patricia Talley and Soror Vickie Crowley-Betts, wonderful new ideas and programs were started on the campus.
Years later Mu Theta has continued to move forward on the campus of Middle Tennessee State University on the Sorority’s principles of Finer Womanhood, Scholarship, Service and Sisterhood. Mu Theta has thrived for forty years and many great years to come.
